Scanpack Summit: New forum will shape the future of the industry

Politicians, researchers and business leaders are invited to a completely new strategic conference in conjunction with the Scanpack packaging trade fair this autumn.

“We see a great need in the industry. The questions of transition are urgent. At Scanpack Summit we make room for the important issues,” says Anna-Lena Friberg, Business Manager at Scanpack.

Scanpack is Northern Europe’s leading meeting place for the packaging industry. This year the fair will take place October 4–7 at the Swedish Exhibition and Congress Centre in Gothenburg. On the first day, the all-new Scanpack Summit initiative will take place.

“This is the result of a demand-driven initiative that originated from our exhibitors. “Up to now, there has been no arena for discussing strategic issues in the industry,” says Anna-Lena Friberg, Business Manager at Scanpack.

New ways to cooperate

Scanpack Summit will be a one-day strategy conference, aimed at decision-makers in the packaging industry. The opportunity is well chosen, as large parts of the packaging world are still located in Gothenburg.

“We see how easily polarisation and different theories about what is best for the future arise, for example in the selection of materials. At the same time, there is a desire to meet across borders and find new ways to work together on critical future issues such as sustainability, climate change and circular solutions,” says Anna-Lena Friberg.

The intention is for Scanpack Summit to bring together researchers and politicians with the packaging industry’s decision-makers, thought leaders and end-customers.

Annika Persson is a business developer at the Swedish Exhibition and Congress Centre and is working on the concept of the Scanpack Summit. She believes that the entire packaging industry needs to drive sustainability in a deeper way in its business and development strategies. Scanpack Summit captures the issues and all their perspectives: from the researchers’ view to the demands of business for profitability and to what is politically possible.

Challenge the conventional

“We want to create a hotspot that attracts brand owners and large companies, not least those who design and develop the materials: the forest industry, cardboard and bioplastic, and so on,” says Annika.

“We hope that researchers, politicians and business representatives will listen to each other. To get a truly energetic dialogue we are also inviting innovators and other stakeholders to challenge the conventional.

She notes that megatrends are changing over time: consumers are becoming increasingly mobile, better informed, developing new preferences and buying patterns.

“This has a significant impact on the packaging industry and its profitability, drives transformation and increases the need to think in new ways. At Scanpack Summit we dare to have the discussions, even the uncomfortable ones. We need a balanced debate, with different approaches, in order to find the best possible solution.”
