60 years of innovation and surprises

When we opened the doors to the first Scanpack fair in 1964, we probably couldn’t have imagined how much would change along the way – both for us and the packaging industry. From the early days of simple solutions to today’s advanced packaging technologies, a lot has happened. What has really transpired over these 6 decades? We thought we’d take you on a nostalgic journey and reminisce about some of the major packaging innovations of the past. 📦✨  (Image: Packnews.se)

The 1960s

Back then, plastic was a new and revolutionary material choice. Packaging that could protect products in an entirely new way became a hot topic. Think back to when single-use packaging started becoming popular – a past innovation that truly made its mark! (Image: Packnews.se)

The 1980s

In the 1980s, the Swedish packaging industry stabilized after years of intense innovation. The major product groups had established efficient systems, and markets were more stable. Introducing revolutionary packaging ideas became risky and challenging for both packaging suppliers and users.

By the late 1970s, bulk bags, or big bags, were introduced, reflecting a shift from consumer packaging to transport packaging. The focus on handling, transport, and storage costs became increasingly important.

The 2000s

The explosion of e-commerce led to a massive increase in the need for smart and functional packaging. Think about how ‘unboxing’ became a trend and how packaging became a part of the experience.

The 2020s

The focus on bio-based and biodegradable materials is stronger than ever. We are seeing a shift from plastic to paper. At the same time, plastic continues to play an important role, with an emphasis on sustainability and recycling. ♻️
